Children of War

Were my (grand)parents Nazis?

Every German family has a war story – yet these stories are still often suppressed or left unspoken. But the generation of war children who can tell them is growing smaller. Ask while you still can: How did your (grand)parents experience that time? What was their attitude towards National Socialism? And what impact does it still have today?

Flight, nights spent in air-raid shelters, life in displaced persons camps, or returning from captivity: In artistically created scenes inspired by old dollhouses and drawings, Heike von Schlebrügge brings her parents’ formative memories to life, making visible the experiences of an entire generation of German children who grew up during and after the war.

Accompanied by photographs and personal testimonies from her family, the artist portrays everyday life under National Socialism, during the war, and in the post-war period.

An interactive research station invites visitors to explore their own family history and reflect on the question:

What was my (grand)parents’ role during the Nazi era?
