Last October, we planted a very special apple tree in front of the Place of Remembrance BADEHAUS: a young Korbinian apple tree. Since then, our team has carefully watered it and watched it grow. Now there is a particularly wonderful reason to celebrate: our little tree is bearing its very first apple!
The apple variety goes back to the Catholic priest and passionate pomologist (“apple expert”) Korbinian Aigner. During his imprisonment at Dachau concentration camp from 1941 to 1945, he was forced to work on the camp’s experimental plantations. Despite these conditions, he managed to secretly cultivate several new apple varieties. One of them later became known as the “Korbinian apple.”
In cooperation with Jugendsiedlung Hochland in Königsdorf, which initiated the idea for this planting project, the project was also implemented at the Place of Remembrance BADEHAUS last year. It is now bearing its first fruit here.
The first Korbinian apple in front of the Place of Remembrance BADEHAUS is a visible sign that remembrance continues to grow.
