On 11 July, the BADEHAUS Memorial Site reached a special milestone: with the visit of Walter Schauer, it welcomed its 31,000th visitor since opening.

Originally from Waldram and now living in Munich, Schauer is a passionate football supporter and actively involved in fan initiatives of FC Schalke 04 and TSV 1860 Munich, where he campaigns against racism and promotes diversity and inclusion.

Schauer has been familiar with the history of the former Föhrenwald Displaced Persons camp since childhood. His interest in returning to the BADEHAUS Memorial Site was sparked by the current special exhibition, “Football, Boxing, Gymnastics – Sport in Föhrenwald and Waldram.” On display until 6 September, the exhibition explores the unique sporting culture of both the Jewish DP camp and the later settlement established for displaced Germans in Waldram.

For some time now, Schauer has been a regular visitor to events at the BADEHAUS Memorial Site. Despite a mobility impairment, he regularly makes the journey from Munich by public transport to attend its programmes.
