The 4th special exhibition staged by the memorial site BADEHAUS showcases pictures by the Italian photographer Mattia Balsamini. It documents objects from refugees, who drowned on their passage across the Mediterranean. These moving left-overs tell the story of their deceased owner’s life. They were discovered among the wreckage of a ship that sank in 2015 and photographed by Mattia Balsamini for the forensic investigation in Milan.
Mattia Balsamini was born in 1987 in Pordenone, Italy. From 2008 on he lived for a number of years in Los Angeles, USA, where he worked in the fashion and film business. Currently he teaches at Venice’s High School for Architecture as well as various photo agencies.
The photo reportage “From all the way down” was first published in the magazine of the German daily “Süddeutsche Zeitung” on May 17, 2019, before the BADEHAUS memorial site turned it into an exhibition.
On December 1, 2019 the exhibition opened in the BADEHAUS during a vernisage with interviews and clips and the presence of the artist.
