In 2024, Susanne Hanus made a lasting contribution to the culture of remembrance with her artistic intervention Entanglements (Verstrickungen) at the BADEHAUS Memorial Site. She now returns with her book Journey to Chernivtsi, sharing a moving story of tracing family roots across generations, memory, and the present day.
In 2008, three generations of one family set out on a journey together: grandmother, son, and granddaughter travel to Bukovina, the region from which the family was resettled during the Nazi era in 1940.

Their search for traces of the past leads them to sites of memory in Görlitz, Seidenberg (today Zawidów), and Chernivtsi. With the help of an old map from the Austro-Hungarian Empire, they eventually succeed in locating the grandmother’s former family home.
Drawings and diary excerpts intertwine with historical events, the experiences of the journey, and the development of Ukraine. The result is a compelling fusion of art, remembrance, and storytelling.
The book presentation will take place as part of a matinee event and will be accompanied musically by students from the Wolfratshausen Music School. Following the presentation, guests are warmly invited to join the artist for a reception and conversation. Donations toward refreshments are welcome.
